African Drum and Dance workshop

Do you drum but don't dance, or dance but don't drum?  Do you have no experience with either?  Then this workshop is perfect for you! Come join this unique, welcoming workshop geared toward beginners.  We will start with a drumming warm-up and then proceed to learn the various parts that comprise a traditional West African rhythm.  Drum technique and rhythm patterns as well as posture and proper drum handling will be taught.  

After a short break we will commence the dance portion of the workshop with a warm-up as well as some gentle moves across the floor set to live drums.  A break down of movements that accompany the rhythm you just learned in the drum portion will be demonstrated and an explanation of the cultural relevance of the rhythm and dance experienced.  We will playfully create a short sequence of movements that directly interact with the drums using breaks and calls- learning to communicate with the drums through dance.
