Life Drawing @LSC Winter 2012 - in the Gallery this year!

Life Drawing is a classical practice that artists have used for centuries.
Drawing models in quick or gesture poses, leading into longer poses,
allows the hand to warm up and create loose and free sketches and contour drawings.
Focusing on composition and line quality, drawing from life is a
quintessential way to improve one's drawing skill.  The ongoing Life Drawing Group will start up again after a holiday break, and will be held from 6pm-8:30 in the Gallery of LSC. For ages high school and up. The group is facilitated by Andrew White.   No materials or instructions are given.  The group is informal and a great place to practice and explore your drawing (no photography please). A session is two and half hours and within each session there are a variety of pose lengths. 12 consecutive sessions costs $120 (tuesdays through March 20) or $15 for individual drop-ins. Portable easels are recommended for those who wish to stand.

Anyone interested in modeling may contact info@lincolnstreetcenter.org

Life Drawing is held on Tuesdays upstairs in the Jean B. Chalmers Art Gallery, 6-8:30pm

About Ron Frontin and the ongoing Studio Art Class

Ronald Frontin, Mid-coast Maine artist, is well-known and admired on a national level. He has shown in prestigious Galleries in New York and reputable local galleries. His work is owned by museums and major art collectors.

Frontin, who has been sought after as an instructor, began this ongoing visual art program February 2010.  Beginning with charcoal drawing, Ron teaches foundational skills with simple subjects. His emphasis is on tonal rendering of forms in black and white to create the illusion of space and light. As students gain basic skills by practicing with Frontin's one-on-one guidance, they graduate to grisaille painting with oil. After learning the grisaille phase of the study white is added to the palette in creation of opaque painting. The next level of study is color painting with oil. Students may purchase at wholesale prices, artists quality paint in the recommended palette Frontin uses. Still lifes are set up for each area of study within the studio, with students at 4 different levels simultaneously. Finally oil painting at the most advanced level of still lifes and portraits is practiced. Personal projects are encouraged.

Frontin doesn't claim to have invented this method, but cites 400 years of traditional instruction through the techniques he shares and personally oversees. Some students have been in the class since its inception. Once monthly new students are admitted, with an introduction given 1/2 before class starts, and brought through the first phase of the course together. The next opening for new students is Jan. 6, 2012, at 4:30, and the next opportunity will be Feb. 3. You must register in advance to attend.

The class is held in a large Studio, #18 &19 at Lincoln Street Center on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 5-8 pm.  It is recommended that both weekly classes are attended, but flexibility will be given to those who can only commit to one session per week, or occasional attendance.

New Studio Member Ken Foster shares his experience, and posts a film of Ron teaching the beginning level of the course at his blog:
