Workshop Art

On Saturday, September 5th, 18 artists gathered in the gymnasium of Lincoln Street Center, where Susan Beebe had materials and stations prepared for the first Community Sculpture Workshop. The group looked at Maria Nevelson's exhibition together in the Jean B. Chalmers Art Gallery and had a question-answer period with the 3rd generation Nevelson Sculptor, visiting from Philadelphia. Maria shared about the process of making her work as an inspiration to the artists about to embark on this journey with her.

As the materials provided by Bench Dogs, Jonathan Frost Gallery, Lowe's and Home Depot were made into assemblages ala Louise Nevelson, and now Maria, the sound of hammers and artists at work resounded through the gym. We spray painted our pieces outdoors, and were amazed, we got it!

Soon the unveiling of the collaboration will be announced. A Nevelson inspired piece, including Maria's sculpture will be installed in the hallway of Lincoln Street Center. Please come and see what has been created!.

BACKGROUND - The call to enter:
Artists and Art Students will be invited to participate in this enjoyable and educational creative endeavor. The one-of-a-kind event will begin with Maria Nevelson speaking briefly on the formal and aesthetic workings in her art as well as those of the work of her grandmother Louise Nevelson. Next, Rockland artist and Lincoln Street Board member will join Maria in facilitating a hands-on collaborative workshop in which participants can explore unique creative possibilities while piecing together their own constructions from found objects. In the final phase, the individual artists come together as one creative entity, under the guidance of Maria Nevelson and Susan Beebe, when their individual sculptures will be combined as one large piece to form the first Lincoln Street Center Community Sculpture.

Note: Studio Member Claire Perry remembered reading in the local newspaper where Louise Nevelson was looking for wooden scraps to use for her artwork. In honor of Louise and her Rockland heritage, Claire suggested the idea of making an assemblage in the style of Louise Nevelson here at the Center.
