CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Gentle Yoga. A soothing and restful class rooted in the Kripalu yoga tradition. Through gentle yoga postures (asanas) and breathwork (pranayama), students will learn to tune into their inner wisdom and trust their natural strength. Detailed instruction and modifications will be provided for all postures including forward bends, backbends, twists, lateral stretches and inversions. Restorative postures and deep relaxation will round out the experience. The benefits of this class include a quiet and focused mind, a lengthened spine, increased flexibility in the joints and an open heart. This is a gentle class; perfect for beginners, individuals healing injuries and advanced students who want to slow down.
Meditation. Are you curious about meditation? Are you looking for ways to cultivate compassion and relax your mind. The practice of meditation offers a gentle way to open to full awareness. Come sit, breathe and relax into your whole being. The gatherings include silent sitting and walking meditation, pranayama, gentle guidance for mindfulness, readings from meditation teachers and integration/discussion.
Vinyasa Flow. A dynamic and spirit-lifting class rooted in the Kripalu yoga tradition. Dive into deep, flowing postures (asanas) to strengthen your physical body and cultivate an open heart. Breathwork (pranayama) will enliven the practice, bringing increased energy and supporting unfolding from the inside out. Students will cultivate awareness of sensation and explore personal edges through sustaining postures. Deep relaxation and meditation will support integration. The benefits of this class include increased strength and flexibility, connection to prana (life force), a clear mind and a rejuvenated soul. This is an intermediate class; previous yoga experience is helpful.
Prepare. Wear comfortable clothing; layers are helpful as your body temperature will change over the course of class. Bring a personal yoga mat, if you have one. (The studio has mats and other props to borrow as well. You are encouraged to buy a mat.) Bring water in a closed container if you’d like. Please arrive 5-10 minutes to set up your mat and settle in. New students kindly arrive early to fill out a registration card.
Make-ups and class credits. Students who sign up for the entire session, may make up any missed classes during the session by attending any offered classes. Class credit for session sign ups is granted for medical reasons and may be carried forward to the next session if necessary. Kindly communicate with Rachel for make-ups or medical absences.
Registration. To save your space, kindly register in advance. Drop-ins and new students are welcome anytime. Rachel Nixon, rachelanixon@gmail.com, 207-594-1694.

ShivaShakti School of Yoga
ShivaShakti Yoga is an integral approach to yoga,
cultivating harmony within the body, mind, and spirit.
Rather than being a style, ShivaShakti Yoga is a
methodology based on traditional teachings adapted
for today’s world. The name ShivaShakti represents the
balancing of masculine and feminine energies, principles
of hard and soft, and yin and yang. This concept of
unifying the energetic polarity within is the focus of
ShivaShakti Yoga.
The physical yoga practice taught at the school is
derived from traditional asana styles. We teach a Vinyasa
form influenced by the sublime, meditative qualities of
Sivananda yoga and the purifying, strengthening, flow
sequences of Ashtanga. ShivaShakti classes reflect the
dynamic polarity of nature, varying from vigorous, flow
classes to more restorative, introspective routines.
